Lake Cumberland Get Ready to Race!

We are excited to be joining Somernites Cruise, Somerset Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce and The Urban Stillhouse-Somerset to celebrate America's 250th with the Biggest Small-Town Fourth of July Celebration with a Soap Box Derby.

  • 8:00am - Race Check-in at the Veterans Park
    (all racers must check-in to race & racers cars will be inspected (please refer to racecar requirements)

  • 9:00am - Opening Prayer at the Veterans Park and Racer Meeting

  • 9:30am - Let’s Race
    Racers will run heat races (
    races will run until all racers have competed)

  • 2:00pm Estimated finish time

  • 2:30pm Racer Parade to the Fountain Square where racecars will be on display during Somernites Cruise

  • 3:00pm Awards

$35 Entry Fee (includes free t-shirt)

Rules & Regulations

Racer Requirements

*Please note this is not a sanctioned event.

  • All participants are required to wear a helmet.

  • Ages 6-12 yrs are also required to wear elbow and knee pads.

  • A parent must sign a waiver for any child under the age of 18. A parent must be with them at all times.

  • All participants are required to sign a waiver acknowledging they understand the rules and guidelines.

  • All participants are required to sign a “Code of Conduct” acknowledging that they understand good sportsmanship.

  • Racers are allowed to obtain their own sponsors to assist in the build of their racecar.

  • Be creative with your car design.

  • NO alcohol, drugs or smoking will be permitted at the event. NO exceptions. Any racer suspected of any will be automatically disqualified and asked to leave the event. City of Somerset PD will also be contacted to handle any disruptions.

  • There will be 3 starting lines. See racetrack map.

    • Starting Gate #1 will be for age group 6-12 yr old

    •  Starting Gate 2 will be for age group 13-20 yr old

    •  Starting Gate 3 will be for age group 21+ yr old

  • There will be designated pit crew to hold racecars at the starting line.

  • If a racer has racecar issues while actively in a race, they will have 5 minutes after the last car crosses the finish line for them to cross the finish line or they will be considered disqualified.

  • Only 3 or 4 racers will race at one time, due to track size and number of racers in each class.

  • Applicants will need to submit their racecar plan/idea with their application. Applications will be reviewed by a panel comprised of at least one person from each “Sponsoring” business to determine if their racecar design follows safety requirements.

Lake Cumberland 250 will feature events across Somerset, Burnside, and Pulaski County, blending live music, classic cars, family fun, and patriotic traditions while inviting local businesses and organizations to participate in a shared regional moment.

Racecar Requirements

  • 1 racer per racecar. NO 2-seater cars allowed.

  • All racecars must include a hand brake. This can be a pull brake, or straight down stop.  

  • All racecars must include 4 wheels with rubber tires. Anything without rubber will not be allowed. This will ensure that no damage is done to the road pavement. Tires must not exceed the size of a bicycle tire.

  • All racecars must have an enclosed seat.

  • NO motors will be allowed on any racecar.

  • NO batteries will be allowed on any racecar.

  • NO fluids will be allowed of any sort on any racecar.

  • Spectators will be allowed to stand along the sidewalk on N Main Street. No spectators will be allowed within the staging or race area.

  • Spectators will be able to use the North parking lot of First Baptist Church. No parking will be permitted within the staging areas or race area.

  • NO alcohol, drugs or smoking will be permitted at the event. NO exceptions. Any spectator suspected of any will be asked to leave the event. City of Somerset PD will also be contacted to handle any disruptions.

  • Hay bales and cones will line the racetrack for safety.

  • Volunteer Pit Crew will be stationed along racetrack with flags to ensure safety for all racers.

  • Soap Box Derby organizers reserve the right to reject any applicant prior to race.
